Braingaze, a spin-off of the University of Barcelona, will launch a pilot test to verify the relationship between eye vergence and early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in collaboration with the Clinical Research Unit of the Hospital Sanitas CIMA and Sanitas Mayores.

45 patients will participate in this observational study: 15 patients with early Alzheimer's dementia, 15 with moderate Alzheimer's dementia, and 15 more without any symptoms of the disease. The collaboration aims to assess the validity of Braingaze's eye vergence examination as a diagnostic test in people between 50 and 70 with a confirmed diagnosis of dementia, or clinical suspicion of dementia. "We want to see if an alteration of gaze fixation before visual stimuli can be a characteristic trait of the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease," says Hans Supèr, CTO of the spin-off.

The tests consist of different examinations through a computer equipped with a remote eye tracker, which will record the reactions to visual stimuli. The data obtained will allow the assessment of the relationship between eye vergence and the manifestation of symptoms of dementia. Currently, the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease comprises different tests that can last for months and, despite being a disease with no cure, early diagnosis can delay its degenerative evolution.
