We began 2020 refreshed and hopeful, with plans to publish unique perspectives and insights to inspire new ideas in the months to come—but COVID-19 changed everything. As the world adapted and reconsidered best laid plans to address this unexpected and unique challenge, so too did the CAS Blog editorial team.

Even before we were accustomed to working from home or comfortable wearing facemasks in public, we responded with the first in a series of highly-read posts from CAS scientists focusing on the pandemic, Beating COVID-19: Insights and strategies for new vaccines and therapies.

As SARS-CoV-2 is a newly discovered pathogen, specific drugs have yet to be clinically approved. Given the urgent need to find effective COVID-19 drugs and the fact that developing a brand new drug usually takes a decade or longer, an alternative effort of drug repurposing is underway to find COVID-19 treatments faster and more efficiently.

Since then, our science team has published new research and scientific insights in more than a dozen COVID-19-related posts on the CAS Blog, including deep dives on the latest mRNA vaccines, the science behind promising ACE2-targeting therapeutics, the underlying mechanisms of the cytokine storm response and more.

Throughout the year, the science-packed posts authored by our scientists have been by far the most read on the CAS Blog. With expertise spanning countless disciplines and speaking over 50 languages, the hundreds of scientists who collect and analyze the world's published science—day in and day out—to build CAS's data collection are the unsung heroes behind our solutions and services. Such close and constant immersion in the latest scientific research enabled them to uncover insights, identify trends and provide expertise on both the basic science and latest progress as the global research community tackled this challenge.

The importance of timely and accurate scientific information in expediting discovery has never been more apparent than in 2020. We sincerely hope that our collection of COVID-19 resources will help accelerate discovery into 2021, as we pursue new opportunities to empower research and technology organizations around the globe. The complex challenge of COVID-19 provided an opportunity for us to leverage our science team's unique capabilities and deep insight in new and different ways that clearly resonated. Based on the tremendous response to these science deep dives, we plan to publish more of this kind of content across scientific disciplines in the coming year.

So as this tumultuous year comes to a close and the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines are welcomed in communities around the world, we look forward to health and healing in the months ahead and leave you with this message of thanks—and of hope for the New Year:

To the innovators of the world,

We know scientific progress is hard enough, but amidst the challenges of 2020, your determination, grit and collaboration has been inspirational. We are grateful for the late nights, the endless video calls, and never-ending possibilities explored. As your connection to the world’s science, we at CAS are humbled to help you discover the breakthroughs the world is desperately seeking.

From our family to yours, happy holidays!
