The European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society has awarded the prize Predrag Klisic for basic research to a study by the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) on the bone antibiotic bioavailability in skeletally immature animal. The work was awarded at the 35th annual meeting of the society, which took place from 6 to 9 April in Rome, Italy.

The aim of the study is to determine bone penetration of antibiotics in the immature skeleton, using a rabbit animal model. The work is being carried out by a multidisciplinary team where researchers from various research groups of VHIR are involved: César García Fontecha and Juan Antonio Porcel (Reconstructive surgery for the Locomotive System) Pere Soler (Immunosuppressed Paediatric Patient Infection), Aurora Fernández (Department of Pharmacy), Juan José González and M Nieves Larrosa (Department of Microbiology), Ramón Martí and M Jesús Melià (Neuromuscular and Mitochondrial Pathology).

The investigation is now in the 3rd phase of 5 originally planned, and is funded by the Institute of Health Carlos III (PFIS 2013), a grant from the Spanish Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases (SEIP 2014) and a grant from the Catalan Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SCCOT 2013).
