Researchers from department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health of the University of Navarra participate in the European project VEGANScreener, which aims to develop and validate a tool that assesses the per diem expenses of vegans in order to prevent hypothetical nutritional deficiencies. The project is funded at European level by the Joint Programming Initiative Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life and is financed by the high school de Salud Carlos III.

For the initial phase of the study, 400 volunteers will be recruited in four countries: Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany and Spain. "In our country, in particular, we need 50 people from Navarra or the surrounding area who follow a vegan per diem expenses for at least two years and another 50 volunteers who consume an omnivorous per diem expenses , i.e. meat and dairy at least 5 times a week," explains Dr. Maira Bes-Rastrollo, manager of the study. "In addition, they only need to be between 18 and 65 years of age and be able to attend an in-person session in Pamplona.

At the beginning of the research, each participant will have blood, urine and saliva taken at sample to measure parameters related to metabolic profile , nutritional status, bone health and oral microbiome. They will also undergo an anthropometric study and blood pressure measurement. "The volunteers will be asked to fill out various questionnaires telematically and complete a four-day dietary record twice to assess per diem expenses, as well as other questionnaires on sociodemographic aspects, physical activity, mood and quality of life," says Dr. Bes-Rastrollo.

Present at Be VEggie, one of the largest vegan events in the world.

"We believe that the information obtained from this international study can benefit other vegans, health professionals and the sustainability of the entire planet in the future," confesses the professor at School of Medicine. For this reason, on December 3 and 4, the group researchers will be present at Be Veggie, one of the largest vegan events to be held at Ficoba, the Gipuzkoa fairgrounds. At the end of the study, each participant will receive a digital kitchen scale, a vegan food book and another gift to thank them for their dedication. In addition, vegans will be provided free of charge with the results of the nutritional markers evaluated (vitamins, minerals, other biomarkers) completely free of charge.
