The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona is known for excellence in research and quality in teaching, and is a prominent European university: on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-2016, it is the best university in Spain and number 146 worldwide.

Its main campus is in Bellaterra, just 25 km from Barcelona, in 263 ha of natural land, and was conceived and structured for university life. It is a real city of knowledge, congregating around 50,000 people: students, lecturers, researchers and administrative and service staff.

Its 13 faculties and schools deliver 81bachelor's degrees in all areas of knowledge, and over 500 master's, graduate diploma and PhD programmes, through classroom-based, online and blended tuition.

As for research, the UAB fosters innovation and transfer in all branches of knowledge. To this end it has 225 officially-recognised research groups, 57 departments, 27 research centres of its own and 37 more that are affiliated or run jointly with other institutions, all carrying out intense research activity, along with other scientific facilities like the ALBA Synchrotron. Furthermore, the university participates in the research work conducted at its five affiliated hospitals, three of which have obtained accreditation from the Carlos III Health Institute.

The UAB Research Park also promotes entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer, through patents and tech start-ups.

A pioneer in biotechnology studies and a front-runner in research

In the field of biotechnology and biomedicine, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has built up a multidisciplinary network that brings together teaching, basic and clinical research, technological platforms, technology transfer and business start-ups.

In teaching, it has pioneered the introduction of Biotechnology studies in Spain, taught in the Faculty of Biosciences, the only one in the country. The Faculty has implemented a rich array of degree courses within the life sciences: Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Biology, Genetics, Microbiology and Biomedical Sciences. In the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings (2014), the UAB is among the top 200 universities in the world in the field of biology.

The university campus hosts an extensive and productive network of departments and research centres working to develop biotechnological solutions that can be applied in a wide variety of contexts: medicine, pharmacology, food products, the environment, industry and agriculture.

Among the university's centres conducting research in the field of biotechnology are the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB), the Centre for Animal Biotechnology and Gene Therapy (CBATEG), the Institute of Neurosciences (INc), the Special Food Technology Research Centre (CERPTA), the Centre for Biophysics Studies and the pilot plant MELISSA, which will generate oxygen and food from organic waste, carbon dioxide and minerals, for use on long space voyages.

Other centres with UAB participation are the Catalan Institute for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) and the Agrigenomics Research Centre (CRAG). The university collaborates in the research activity of the Centre for Research into Animal Health (CReSA), also on campus.

The UAB also has a large number of scientific services and laboratories related to biotechnology research, whose services are available both to the university's own staff and to outside users.
