In the recent Annual Conference of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Orthopedics (SEOP), the Research Group on Reconstructive Surgery of the Locomotor System of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute has been awarded as best scientific work ( VHIR).

The work shows the results of the research for the correction of skeletal deformities in children, which is being done at VHIR, and was presented by doctors César Galo García Fontecha, head of the VHIR Locomotor System Reconstructive Surgery Research Group , María Jurado Ruiz, resident physician of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Department of Vall d'Hebron and Luis Riera Soler, specialist in pediatric radiology at the Hospital MaternoInfantil Vall d'Hebron.

The correction of skeletal deformities in children by guided growth consists in modulate the bone growth by means of small metal plates (2 cm) that are placed in the growth zones causing specific growth restrictions and allow the bone to correct the deformity as it grows. After correcting the deformity the plates are removed and the bone continues normal growth without deformity.

The award-winning research work has studied how anatomical changes occur when guided growth is applied. By using special techniques of magnetic resonance imaging, the authors have shown that the complications depend on the spatial and anatomical placement of the plates. As a result, you can now know how to avoid complications by adjusting the placement of the plates in the most optimal place.

These techniques have become popular in recent years but unexpected complications have begun to appear, such as joint secondary deviations. So far, these complications had not been adequately evaluated, nor had they studied why they happened. Thus, this work places the authors as pioneers in the study of these treatment systems.
