This collaboration is the beginning of a working framework for activities between EMBL and IBEC which support strategic long-term scientific and general collaboration in areas of mutual interest. Some of the proposed join projects are a postdoc EMBL-IBEC program and a series of EMBL-IBEC seminars. Moreover, it is also planned to reinforce visitors’ exchange whereby scientific personnel affiliated to EMBL or IBEC will have the possibility to visit the facilities of the other institution in order to study research developments and techniques and to foster interdisciplinary collaborations.

“We are delighted to start our collaboration with EMBL fostering interdisciplinary and international research” says Josep Samitier.

For instance, this next 10-12th February 2020 IBEC and EMBL have organised a Winter Conference on Engineering multicellular systems. This conference will focus on how engineering multicellular living systems is boosting our understanding of tissue and organ function, with applications in disease modelling, drug screening, and tissue engineering. The symposium will take place in La Pedrera Auditorium, one of Gaudí’s architectural masterpieces in Barcelona, and it has been organised by James Sharpe, head of EMBL-Barcelona and Xavier Trepat, group leader at IBEC.

EMBL is an intergovernmental organisation for the life sciences established in 1974 and funded by 23 member states, including Spain. Research at EMBL emphasises experimental analysis at multiple levels of biological organisation, from the molecule to the organism, as well as computational biology, bioinformatics and systems biology. Research is conducted by more than 80 independent groups covering the spectrum of molecular biology with more than 1700 employees from different nations.
IBEC is a leading-edge multidisciplinary research center that conducts excellent interdisciplinary research at the frontiers of basic and life sciences ilnked with engineering to generate new knowledge and applications by putting together biophysics, cell engineering, nanomedicine, biomaterials, tissue engineering and the applications of the information technology to health. The knowledge that exists in the IBEC research groups is placed at the service of science and society to progress in three major application areas: bioengineering for active aging, bioengineering for future medicine and bioengineering for regenerative therapies.
