In this context the work of Dr. Alejandra Sánchez-Bayo registers, which for several years has worked to produce various types of biofuels from microalgae without producing waste. The dissertation result of research and qualified at the time of his defense with outstanding cum laude , has now been awarded by the Social Council of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.

The work demonstrates that it is possible to generate three types of biofuel using microalgae as a feedstock. Applying different processes (hydrothermal liquefaction biological catalyst from enzymes and anaerobic digestion) to a culture of microalgae, Sanchez-Bayo doctor has managed to produce fuel like kerosene, biodiesel, biogas, with full utilization of the raw material, ie without generating waste. Produced biofuels have a direct application in the automotive industry and air transport, among others.

Alejandra Sánchez-Bayo has been very excited because I did not expect to win, but says that "there is much experimental work in the defense I was told that could take three theses of my research."

The doctor also acknowledges that it has been a tough process of many years of work, "it is a beautiful and frustrating work, the pressure to publish, many years of ups and downs".

Alejandra Sanchez-Bayo has also been combining his research work with teaching, generating "12-hour days and correct many days and analyze the weekends."

The work of Dr. has been led by professors of ESCET Fernando Bautista and Gemma Vincent, and poses a perspective interdisciplinary within the field of experimental science, "includes a biological, biochemical and engineering part," says the author. His thesis has already resulted in a 5 scientific publications in prestigious publications in the sector and adds Alejandra "is expected to post some more in the coming months."

Before doctorar by URJC, Alejandra Sánchez-Bayo was formed initially in Chemistry at the University Complutense (Bachelor and Master) and decided to make his thesis through the Industrial Technologies Program of the International Doctoral School URJC. In the process of investigation he was invited to the University of Pennsylvania. During this stay I had the chance to meet one of the pioneers in the production processes used in biofuel research.
