The Chronic Fatigue group of Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), led by Dr. José Alegre, and the Catalan company VITAE, have published in Clinical Nutrition and Antioxidants & Redox Signaling, the results of a clinical trial and a biological study with antioxidants. In particular, they have demonstrated that a supplement, called Reconnect® and based on the combination of antioxidants Coenzyme Q10 + NADH, improves the symptoms in chronic fatigue syndrome patients.
VHIR researchers, coordinated by Dr. Alegre and Dr. Jesús Castro, conducted a randomized, controlled, double-blind trial in 80 chronic fatigue patients from Vall d’Hebron University Hospital. All patients did an exercise test before and after receiving Reconnect® or placebo during 8 weeks.
The group treated with antioxidants showed a reduction in the maximum heart rate and the perception of the fatigue after the exercise challenge, with regard to the placebo group. As one of the main symptoms of these patients is the exercise intolerance, Dr. Alegre highlights that “the results open a pathway to new treatments using antioxidants with the aim to improve the cardiovascular dysfunction and the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome”.
At the same time, researchers carried out a study of biological markers in blood samples from the patients who participated in the study, before and after the treatment with Reconnect®.
The next step of the Chronic Fatigue group, together with VITAE, is to confirm these results in a larger cohort of patients.
