The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) has received a Climate Leaders Award from the Climate Reality Project, an anti-global-warming initiative founded in 2006 by former US Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore. The aim of the Climate Leaders Awards is to put the struggle against climate change at the forefront of the social and political agenda. The awards recognise Spain’s most effective advocates in the fight against global warming.

At the second edition of the Climate Leaders Awards in Spain, ISGlobal received the award for the most effective NGO in the struggle against climate change. The other winners this year were Grupo Español de Crecimiento Verde, in the business category; Jon Clinomics project, in the emissions-reduction and adaptation category; El País, in the media category; the Basque Government, in the regional administration category; Moving for Climate Now, an initiative of the United Nations Global Compact and Iberdrola, in the awareness-raising category; Ciclogreen, in the start-up category; and Greta Fridays for Future, in the under-18 category.

The awards ceremony took place in Madrid on 24 October, the International Day of Climate Action. The panel of judges was chaired by Álvaro Rodríguez, general coordinator of the Climate Reality Project in Spain. His fellow judges–all renowned environmentalists–were Alicia Tórrego, director of the Conama Foundation; Cristina Monge, executive adviser at Ecodes; Antonio Lucio, expert on sustainable mobility; Mercedes Martín, meteorologist at Antena 3; Sergio de Otto, vice president of Fundación Renovables; Luis JiménezHerrero, President of ASYPS; and Carmen Domínguez, general manager of Mykado Media.

The Climate Reality Project

The Climate Reality Project has a network of more than 230 “Climate Reality Leaders” in Spain and more than 18,000 across the globe, all trained personally by Al Gore. The project is based on the idea that today’s generation is the only one equipped to combat climate change and the last one that will have an opportunity to stop it. Climate Reality Leaders are trained to give presentations about what climate change is and why urgent action must be taken to stop it. Over the past 12 months, more than 30,000 people have attended presentations by Climate Reality Leaders in Spain.
