The University of Barcelona is once again leader in Spain regarding indicators for general scientific impact and publication collaborations, according to 2016 Leiden ranking, an international list assessing the scientific performance of more than 800 universities worldwide, with Harvard as its number 1. Specifically, the University of Barcelona is placed at 127th position worldwide, followed by Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, on 155th position, and the Complutense University of Madrid, on 202nd position.

The ranking, created by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (SWTS) of the Leiden University (Netherlands), is based on a series of bibliometric indicators analysing the performance, scientific impact and collaboration degree of each university centre in the publications of the database included in the Web of Science by Thomson Reuters during 2011-2014.

The University of Barcelona is the highest ranked Spanish university with a total amount of 6.008 publications; mean citation score, mean normalized citation score, MNCS, and proportion top 10% publications, which is considered the most important bibliometric indicator in Leiden’s ranking.

Regarding the total number of publications within each knowledge field, Health Sciences and Biomedicine outstand with a number of 2.654, and Earth and Life Sciences with 1.048 publications.

The Spanish university System, at the gates of the World’s Top Ten

According to data from the QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings 2016, published last week and which classifies university Systems from around the world based on a series of criteria –system’s strength, access, university positions and economic context- Spain holds the 11th place, with a score of 75,3 and surpassing countries such as Switzerland, Italy, Sweden or Finland. The first three positions are led by the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany.

QS highlights the results of the Spanish universities as a strength in the Spanish system, where the University of Barcelona outstands the most, followed by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
