In January 2020, the Pectus Up technique was first introduced to the British Islands. The surgery was performed by Professor Karen Redmond, a cardiothoracic surgeon specialized in the surgical treatment of Pectus Excavatum, as well as minimally invasive procedures in lung cancer and robotic surgery, among other complex respiratory tract conditions. She was joined by Dr. Shyam Kolvekar, one of the most renowned cardiothoracic surgeons in the treatment of thoracic deformities in London, and Professor Manuel López Paredes, current head of Pediatric Surgery at Vall d ‘Hebron Hospital in Barcelona (Spain), and a reference surgeon in Pectus Up.
The SCTS (Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery), based at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, in London, is the representative body for cardiothoracic surgery in Great Britain and Ireland for all healthcare professionals involved and interested in this specialty.
Its main purpose is to advance in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, fostering and promoting excellence in the practice of this specialty, both in innovation and research, as well as in the training of professionals.
One of the activities that the society is annually promoting is the award for the best educational video for trainees in this specialty. This year 2020, the video submitted by Dr. Robert Fleck, Professor Redmond’s attending physician, shared the SCTS Education Operative Video Prize 2020 – Thoracic.
The video, entitled Pectus Up extrathoracic treatment for Pectus Excavatum, was recorded during the Professor Karen Redmond’s surgery at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin in collaboration with Ventura Medical Technologies and has shared the award in the thoracic category with the video Open Laser Metastatectomy, sent by Oliver Harrison.
The aims of this annual award are, on the one hand, to encourage trainees and trainers to use video technology for training, and on the other, to accumulate a library of educational videos at the SCTS.
With this award, the Pectus Up continues to prove to be an excellent alternative for the extrathoracic and non-invasive treatment of Pectus Excavatum. Currently, it is distributed in several countries in Europe and Latin America, where more and more thoracic surgeons show interest in being trained in this technique.
