The “la Caixa” Foundation has announced the resolution of the 2024 call for the CaixaImpulse Innovation program, through which it supports 29 biomedical projects from research centers, hospitals, and universities in Spain and Portugal. In total, the organization will allocate 3.4 million euros to this initiative, which aims to accelerate the market entry of these innovations and bring them closer to the patients who may need them. Additionally, CaixaImpulse Innovation promotes the creation of new products, services, and companies related to life sciences and health.
The project submitted by the Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia has been selected in this call and will be funded with 50,000 euros. The project, led by Dr. Amadeu Llebaria from the Medicinal Chemistry and Synthesis (MCS) group, will be developed in collaboration with the Institute of Functional Genomics of Lyon (IGFL) and the University of Montpellier, both in France.
It is estimated that about one-third of the global population lives with chronic pain, a health issue for which there is no satisfactory solution. In Spain, three out of ten women and two out of ten men suffer from it, according to data from the Chronic Pain Barometer in Spain.
The team leading this project has been working in the field of photopharmacology for over twelve years, developing drugs that are activated by external light to achieve a much more localized and controlled effect. This effect is possible because photopharmaceuticals only act when, how, and where needed, reducing the side effects associated with current pain treatments, such as those based on opioids.
In previous work, the team developed a new photosensitive active compound and demonstrated its effectiveness in cell cultures and animal models. In this project, new compounds will be developed to optimize certain properties as a necessary step before clinical trials in humans can begin. The ultimate goal is to achieve a proof of concept for non-opioid, light-activated analgesics capable of acting with high precision in the required areas without affecting other tissues or organs, thus reducing side effects and avoiding dependency.
