The International Society of Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) has elected two ISGlobal researchers, Bénédicte Jacquemin and Martine Vrijheid, to serve on the executive council of the ISEE Europe Chapter. They will occupy two of the seven seats of the governing body of ISEE Europe, and will thus pursue the work undertaken by Manolis Kogevinas as president of the international society.

“Through its forerunner CREAL, ISGlobal has played a key role in the creation of the ISEE Europe chapter”, explains Kogevinas, also head of the Cancer Programme at ISGlobal. “The participation of both researchers in the Excecutive Council will help place ISGlobal at the front of the environmental health field, after its merger with CREAL last June”, he adds.

“ISEE Europe is a key actor in promoting top-quality environmental research, network activities, public health policy implementation and training of young researchers. I am looking forward to contributing to achieve these goals”, says Bénédicte Jacquemin.

Martine Vrijheid in turn declared she is “excited with the opportunity of giving environmental epidemiology a more prominent role within the European society in the coming years”.

The ISEE Europe Chapter was created in 2012 with aim of promoting the contact between and action by European members of ISEE on matters related to environmental health research, education in environmental epidemiology and the improvement of public health in Europe. It places emphasis on the translation of research findings into timely and effective policies.

Bénédicte Jacqemin has dedicated most of her career to study the effects of air pollution on asthma and other related consequences. She has also worked on the effects of air pollution on reproductive health.

Martine Vrijheid started working in CREAL (now ISGlobal Campus MAR) in 2008 and focused on the effects of environmental exposures on child health and development. She is currently the principal investigator of several European projects on child health.
