Screening for genital chlamydia infection in young sexually active women should be introduced in our country. This is the conclusion of a study carried out in Lleida, with funding from the Diputació de Lleida, with 628 people aged 18 to 25 from September 2021 to May 2022.

"Genital chlamydia infection continues to increase and remains the most prevalent infection in Catalonia in young people, and we believe that establishing a systematic screening of asymptomatic people and improving communication are two tasks that need to be addressed as soon as possible to avoid the complications of the spread of this infection, especially in women" explained the leader of the research, Oriol Yuguero, head of the Emergency Department of the Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital, professor at the UdL and researcher at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine of Lleida (IRBLleida).

The project, which has received the collaboration of Lleida City Council, the Department of Education of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Lleida Anti-AIDS Foundation, has been carried out by researchers from the Catalan Institute of Health, the University of Lleida (UdL) and the Lleida Biomedical Research Institute (IRBLleida).

"Performing a free annual determination of chlamydia in urine in all sexually active women under the age of 25 could be a good strategy. Medical guidelines recommend it and the evidence of chlamydia infection in the urine of all sexually active women under the age of 25 could be a good strategy.
