The Bosch i Gimpera Foundation, the centre for the transfer of knowledge, technology and innovation of the University of Barcelona, the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, the Pompeu Fabra University signed with the Catalan start-up Galgo Medical a collaboration agreement for the development of medical technologies in the field of the cardiac arrhythmia.
The license agreement grants exclusive rights to exploit two patents co-owned by the public research institutions in favour of Galgo Medical, also co-owner, to further develop and commercialize derived products from the patent licensing. The technology is intended to characterize the arrhythmia substrate of the heart to facilitate the prediction of the risk of sudden death and for the planning of ventricle tachycardia interventions throughout ablation techniques.
In the opinion of Dr. Berruezo, Dr. Brugada and Dr. Mont, co-inventors, electro-physiologists from the Hospital Clinic and partners at Galgo Medical, the recent arrival of 3D MRI data with anatomical and functional unprecedented detail is revolutionizing the understanding of the heart infarction structure and its function. This will improve not only the ablation treatment, but also predicting the risk of sudden death for patients at risk, leading to better treatment.
The market for the treatment of arrhythmias has worldwide sales of $ 12 billion. Within this market, the treatment of arrhythmias by catheter has a turnover of $ 2.1 billion with an expected annual growth of 12.9% for the period between 2009 and 2015
