CIC bioGUNE - member of the Basque Research & Technology Alliance, BRTA -, Fundación ONCE and Ikerbasque have signed a collaboration agreement to promote the research career of people with disabilities in the field of health sciences.

Under this agreement, one person with disabilities, selected in the PhD category of the 8th edition of the ONCE Foundation's "Opportunity for Talent" Grants Programme, and two other disabled people, in the research category of the same call, will conduct their research at CIC bioGUNE.

The collaboration agreement, the aim of which is to improve equal opportunity, universal accessibility, inclusion and non-discrimination of people with disabilities, to support diversity and to enable disabled people to access training and employment opportunities, was signed by José María Mato, General Director of CIC bioGUNE; Iñigo Atxutegi, General Manager of Ikerbasque; and Alberto Durán, Vice-president of the ONCE Foundation.

The training programme will be conducted at CIC bioGUNE through employment contracts for disabled people in three different categories: Predoctoral Trainee, Postdoctoral Trainee and Postdoctoral Research Fellow.

Funding and length of contracts
In the category of Predoctoral Trainee, the contract will run for a maximum of 3 years, with an annual gross salary of EUR 16,422 the first 2 years and EUR 17,279 the third and final year. This will be funded by the ONCE Foundation and CIC bioGUNE.

In the category of Postdoctoral Trainee, the contract will also run for a maximum of 3 years, with an annual gross salary of EUR 32,423. Again, this will be funded by the ONCE Foundation and CIC bioGUNE.

Finally, in the category of Postdoctoral Research Fellow, the agreement will run for a maximum of 5 years through a research contract with access to the Spanish Science, Technology and Innovation System, with a gross annual salary of EUR 40,164. This will be funded by Ikerbasque, the ONCE Foundation and CIC bioGUNE.

About the ONCE Foundation
The ONCE Foundation for Cooperation and Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities was created in February 1988, by agreement of the ONCE General Council, and was publicly launched in September of that same year as a vehicle of cooperation and solidarity of blind people in Spain with other groups of people with disabilities to improve their living conditions. In addition to the ONCE itself, as a founding entity, the leading organisations of people with disabilities in Spain are also present in the ONCE Foundation through its Board of Trustees, its highest governing body. The Board of Trustees also includes the Spanish Committee of Representatives of People with Disabilities (CERMI), which brings together the main organisations representing the 3.8 million people with disabilities and their families in Spain.

The main source of funding of the Foundation every year is the 3% of the gross revenue generated through the ONCE's games of chance. This figure represents one euro of every three that ONCE assigns to social services.

About CIC bioGUNE
The Centre for Cooperative Research in Biosciences (CIC bioGUNE), based in the Bizkaia Technology Park, conducts cutting-edge research at the interface between structural, molecular and cell biology, with a particular focus on generating knowledge on the molecular bases of disease, for use in the development of new diagnostic methods and advanced therapies.

About the BRTA
The BRTA is an alliance made up of 4 collaborative research centres (one of which is CIC bioGUNE) and 12 technology centres, with the aim of developing advanced technological solutions for Basque companies.

With the support of the Basque Government, the SPRI Group and the Provincial Councils of the three regional provinces, the alliance seeks to promote collaboration among its centres, to strengthen the conditions to generate and transfer knowledge to companies, contributing to their competitiveness, and to spread Basque scientific and technological capacity outside of the Basque Country. The BRTA accounts for 22% of the Basque Country’s investment in R&D and generates an annual turnover of over EUR 300 million.
