Astaxanthin and curcumin are two of the most studied natural substances for their properties as potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Because of their low solubility, poor stability and rapid metabolism, they both have limited oral bioavailability even when administered at very high doses. Furthermore, due to their high lipophilicity, natural extracts containing these molecules are often available as viscous pasty or oily materials, usually difficult to manipulate and formulate in solid dosage forms.

Composite solid microparticles containing high loads of oleoresin extracts have been produced applying CryoXpand technology. Microspheres formulations are designed to release active biomolecules in rapid and controlled manners, while maintaining them in solution for a prolonged period of time, thereby accessible for absorption.

These studies were conducted in the framework of CAMINA** R&D project, and were performed in close collaboration with LEITAT Technology Center. CAMINA was partially funded by CDTI (Spanish Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology), under PID-2017 call.

The project was successfully completed resulting in the design and construction of a new cryospraying R&D pilot equipment, and in the development of several natural extracts prototype products, with potential for the nutraceutical market. The products, as fine microspheres in powder form, were designed to enhance and modulate the dissolution of the active biomolecules to eventually improve their bioavailability profiles in comparison with the oily extracts and with marketed reference products in powder form.

The new pilot equipment was constructed according to cGMP criteria, so that it is suitable to produce batches for early clinical phases. Reaching this milestone will certainly contribute to increasing SITEC pharmabio´s product development capabilities in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical sectors. The pilot scale equipment is installed and fully operational at our new laboratory at Synergy R&D building in Esplugues, (Barcelona).

"CryoXpand is the trade name for SITEC pharmabio´s green, CO2-based, solvent-free cryospraying technology"

** CAMINA is the acronym for the project: OBTENCIÓN DE CAPSULAS MICRO- Y NANO- POR PROCESOS ECOSOSTENIBLES SIN LA PRESENCIA DE SOLVENTES
