Five UPF researchers are among the 100 most cited Spanish scientists in the world

The Cybermetrics Lab at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has published a list of the most cited Spanish scientists worldwide. Of the 5,000 scientists who make up the ranking, 103 belong to Pompeu Fabra University, five of whom are in the top 100.

Teun A. van Dijk, professor at Department of Translation and Language Sciences (DTCL) at UPF since 1999, heads the list in 6^th position, with more than 66,500 citations. His work focuses on critical discourse studies, analyzing its power and effects on the ideology of society.

With more than 51,400 citations and in 33^rd position comes Roderic Guigó, professor at the University since 2001 and coordinator of the Bioinformatics Programme of the Center for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona (CRG). Guigó works with genomics, studying the signals involved in the specification of genes in genomic sequences.

The next member of UPF on the list is Ricardo Baeza Yates, the 51^st most cited Spanish researcher in the world. ICREA research professor and coordinator of the Web Research Group of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) at UPF, Baeza Yates is an expert in algorithms and data structures, information retrieval data searching and mining on the web, and has been the vice president for research of Yahoo! Labs for the past ten years.

Francisco X. Real, professor at the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences (DCEXS) at UPF and head of the Epithelial Carcinogenesis group of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), is ranked 60. Real has made important contributions in the field of the biology of pancreatic and bladder cancer, and lately has focused on the genetic analysis of skin tumors.

Finally, at number 72 we find Ricard Solé, head of the DCEXS’s Complex Systems Lab and ICREA research professor. One of his main interests is the understanding of the origins of complexity and destruction, both in biological systems and in artificial systems. To achieve this, the laboratory conducts both theoretical and experimental research, including a synthetic biology programme.

The Ranking of Scientists in Spain is based on data found in Google Scholar Citations in January 2016. It is an initiative of the CSIC’s Cybermetrics Lab as part of the "Ranking Web of Universities" or Webometrics, the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions. Since 2004 and every six months an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise is performed by the Cybermetrics Lab (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) for the provision of reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world based on their web presence and impact. The most cited Spanish scientist in the world this year was Alberto Ruiz Jimeno, professor at the University of Cantabria and principal investigator in the Structure of Matter Department of the Institute of Physics of Cantabria.
