Funditec Research Health has officially opened a new laboratory in the Ilumina building, located at the BASID Campus in Esplugues de Llobregat. This cutting-edge environment strengthens our presence in the Barcelona biomedical hub and opens new pathways for collaboration with leading institutions in health and innovation.

From this new headquarters, Funditec Health, led by Dr. Domingo Gargallo-Viola, will continue its work in translational research, therapeutic development, and health innovation, heading both national and European projects aimed at improving healthcare systems and discovering new treatments.

In the therapeutic field, Funditec Health is actively engaged in the development of innovative treatments for infectious, oncological, neurodegenerative, rare, and pandemic-related diseases. This work is complemented by the advancement of new digital platforms and clinical solutions aimed at transforming healthcare delivery. In this context, Funditec collaborates with leading hospitals such as Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid, through a long-term agreement with its Biomedical Research Foundation.

One of Funditec Health’s key priorities is to continue the development of three new antibiotic families discovered by Dr. Domingo Gargallo-Viola through AB2Therapeutics, a Funditec venture created to address multidrug-resistant bacterial infections—one of the major global health threats. Among them is AB877, an antibiotic with a completely new mechanism of action that disrupts the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii. No new class effective against these pathogens had been discovered in over 50 years, making this line of research a breakthrough of enormous relevance in the field of antibiotics.

Building on this success, Funditec is considering the creation of a new basic research center in Barcelona, dedicated to the discovery of novel anti-infective agents. This initiative, promoted by the Funditec Research Institute, would be developed in collaboration with international non-profit organizations focused on delivering affordable therapies for neglected infectious diseases.

With this move, the foundation led by Antonio Navarro aims to further strengthen its role as a driver of biomedical innovation from Catalonia to the world.
