On the 21st of April, a group of biotech firms that belong to Bioga (Clúster Tecnolóxico Empresarial das Ciencias da Vida de Galicia) learned about the benefits of using bioinformatics in developing new drugs. Founder and CEO of bioinformatics firm Mind the Byte Alfons Nonell-Canals gave a conference in Santiago de Compostela as part of the Bioalmorzos programme organised by Bioga and the Axencia Galega de Innnovación (GAIN) throughout the year.

"I want to tell you about the BioIT experience, a sector that offers new technology for bio companies," explained Nonell-Canals, who also said that his company "develops software algorithms to help biotech companies develop better molecules more quickly." It takes 20 years for a drug to make its way to patients. "We, with bioinformatics, shorten times, optimise the discovery phase for molecules and, for example, predict adverse effects."
