IBS GRANADA scientists develop a web application to improve the treatment of infections

This technology promoted from the ibs.GRANADA will mean a significant improvement in healthcare work

The research group on Emergent and Translational Microbiology at ibs.GRANADA, has launched a new web application called "RESBAC", which is already being used by health personnel at the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital in Granada (HUVN), by facilitating the management of microbiological diagnosis and treatment of infections.

This novel tool allows to quickly and easily know the etiology of the most frequent infections, the sensitivity patterns to antibiotics of the main responsible bacteria, as well as the level of global activity of the antibiotics that are administered. In this way, physicians are made easier to adopt the optimal treatment for each patient.

The presence of bacteria in the blood, respiratory tract and urinary tract are life-threatening infections of patients. In recent years, the need for health personnel to have tools that facilitate their diagnostic work has become evident, as well as the adoption of the most suitable presumptive treatment for each case.

In order to respond to this need, the ibs.GRANADA team led by doctors from the HUVN microbiology service, José María Navarro Marí and José Gutiérrez Fernández, and from the Faculty of Medicine, Antonio Sorlózano Puerto and Rubén Sánchez, have developed this web application that also allows access to the integrated representation of information from antibiograms, cultures, clinical practice guidelines and advances in scientific literature.

The web application is based on the scientific work that this research group has developed for more than 7 years. It has been promoted thanks to the support of the Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit of the ibs.GRANADA and is a clear example of the incorporation into clinical practice of the innovations developed by hospital research groups, ultimately facilitating their care work and care to the patient.

The near future of this web application is its incorporation into the clinical practice of other hospitals of the Andalusian Health Service.

About the research group

The research group on Emergent and Translational Microbiology at ibs.GRANADA, led by José María Navarro Marí, is made up of researchers from the Microbiology Service of the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital and the Department of Microbiology of the University of Granada. It also has a Monardes Contract Investigator. The activity takes place in the Microbiology Service of the Virgen University Hospital, where the Andalusian Virus Reference Laboratory is located; in the Faculty of Medicine of the UGR and in Genyo.

The lines of research in which they work are the involvement of infectious agents in diseases of uncertain etiology, multi-resistant microorganisms and emerging viruses in human pathology.
