Bullnet Capital has led a €2.5 million investment round in IMPETUX OPTICS S.L., a spin-off from the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), in a transaction that will support the industrialisation and commercial launch of its advanced microscopy technology.
Established in 2012, Impetux Optics focuses on developing advanced photonic instrumentation for the life sciences, including optical tweezers and innovative confocal microscopy solutions. The company stems from research carried out by faculty members and scientists at the UB’s Faculty of Physics in areas such as photonics, biophysics, and advanced microscopy, blending this scientific foundation with a team experienced in product development and the commercialisation of scientific equipment.
Central to its technology is a proprietary innovation based on acousto-optic deflectors (AOD), enabling a fully solid-state and programmable confocal microscopy architecture. By removing conventional mechanical components, this approach allows for high-speed imaging with reduced phototoxicity, enhanced robustness, and significant flexibility to adapt to varying experimental conditions within a single platform. Through this advancement, Impetux is elevating confocal microscopy, delivering faster, more resilient, and more versatile systems for applications in cell biology and drug discovery.
With this investment, the company aims to accelerate both the industrialisation process and the international rollout of its technology, where it is already recognised as a global leader in optical tweezers development. The spin-off also intends to reinforce its presence in the global microscopy market, particularly in cell biology, drug discovery, and quantitative analysis applications.
The capital raised will support progress along its technological roadmap, including the development of an initial integrated version with Sensocell® as well as a high-performance standalone system. Additionally, the company plans to expand its team, strengthen its industrial capabilities, and enhance its commercial strategy to sustain growth and pursue collaborations with strategic industry partners. At the same time, efforts will be made to scale up the production and commercialisation of its Sensocell® optical tweezers systems.
The main goal of the round is therefore to drive the industrialisation and commercial deployment of the company’s confocal microscopy system while accelerating its international expansion.
The investment is backed by the InnovFin SME Guarantee Facility, supported by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 financial instruments.
This transaction also underscores the commitment of the Universitat de Barcelona and the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation to knowledge transfer and the creation of high-impact innovative companies capable of turning scientific research into globally scalable technological solutions.
