Researchers Group basic and clinical Immunology and Endocrinology Institute for Biomedical Research Foundation Dr. Lleida Pifarré (IRBLleida), the University Hospital Arnau de Vilanova (HUAV) and the University of Lleida (UDL) are assessing the impact of diabetes on lung function and breathing during sleep. This is a project led by the principal investigator of the group and head of Endocrinology HUAV and professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lleida, Lecube Albert, who just participate with the lecture "Can diabetes influence on lung function? "on the 8th symposium on diabetes Research Conference of the Catalan Institute of Health, to be held on June 3 in Girona.

"Our previous work has shown that the negative effect type 2 diabetes exerts on both lung function and breathing on the night. And that is why now we want to show that improved glycemic control of diabetes also obtain benefits in lung function, "said Dr. Albert Lecube.

Diabetic patients can present more easily than people without diabetes reduced respiratory capacity. The ultimate goal of the research is to identify the lung as a new target organ complications of diabetes. For this reason, the Department of Endocrinology and Nutrition, and with the strong support of Pneumology, sponsors and directs the HUAV a multicenter clinical trial that includes centers throughout Spain, with the aim of studying the differential effect on lung function of several drugs used to treat diabetes. This test has been approved by the Spanish Medicines Agency and is expected to include the first patient in the month of July.

This Research Group IRBLleida the first to study the bidirectional relationship between diabetes and lung disease. That is currently finalizing the commissioning of a review commissioned by the journal Lancet Respiratory Medicine gives an idea of its international impact.
