ISGlobal Participates in its first open day at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park

On October 1st, the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park celebrated once more its annual open day with the aim of bringing science closer to the people of Barcelona. The 2016 edition is the first in which ISGlobal participates, after the merger with the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) last June. The event offered numerous activities, including guided tours, divulgative talks and workshops for all ages, and was attended by the Barcelona mayor, Ada Colau.

Colau joined the directors and general managers of the six research centres located in the PRBB for a guided tour of the main facilities of the building and two of its laboratories. ISGlobal was represented by its general director Antoni Plasència and its managers Gonzalo Vicente and Gemma Perelló. The mayor, who also witnessed some of the workshops that took place in the building’s courtyard, was “proud” of the outstanding scientific activity carried out by the Park. This activity, in her opinion, makes of Barcelona a “leading city in knowledge and research”.

ISGlobal Campus Mar Activities

PRBB is home to different research centres including ISGlobal Campus Mar (previously CREAL) that leads the Barcelona Institute for Global Health’s research lines on non-communicable diseases and environment. Throughout the day, ISGlobal held a stand from which it informed visitors on its projects related to issues such as the benefits of active mobility, the health impact of radiations, and the recently created Urban Planning, Environment and Health Initiative.

In addition, researchers Manolis Kogevinas and Laia Font offered informative talks on occupational cancer and toxins in swimming pools, repectively, while Clara Ballesté and Elisabet Guiral organized the workshop “Design your own bacterium” for the younger visitors.

Furthermore, volunteers from the Cancer Research group participated in the guided tours by holding a station from which they informed the public on some key aspects of their work.
