Pharmacists argue the need to generate knowledge about the use of new drugs

The XXIX edition of the Congress of the Spanish Society of Clinical Pharmacology, held from 20 to 21 October at the Vall d'Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus, emphasized the need to generate knowledge about the use of new drugs in usual clinical practice.

According to Dr. Eduard Diogène, head of the Clinical Pharmacology Service at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital and chairman of the organizing committee of the congress, one of the conclusions was the need to "document the effectiveness, safety and efficiency of drugs, given their high cost for the National Health System." Therefore, he proposes "to boost clinical research, taking advantage of the possibilities offered by computerized medical records and patient records."

At the conference, Dr. Diogène, Dr. Maria Antonia Agustí and Dr. Immaculada Danés exposed how the Pharmacology Service and the research group support the clinical management of the introduction of new medicines in the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital.

The meeting was attended by more than 160 clinical pharmacists around the country. Another key feature of the annual meeting was the defense of the role they have to continue playing the clinical pharmacologist to promote leadership and responsibility of physicians in decisions on selection and use of medicines, according to their responsibilities before patients and the National Health System.
