Liver cirrhosis is currently one of the leading causes of death in most countries, and responsible for a great use of health resources. The European project LIVERHOPE, led by Pere Ginés, professor of Medicine and head of the Hepatology Service of the Clinic Hospital and member of IDIBAPS, coordinator center of the project, aims to research on a treatment to stop the progress of the disease, based on the repurposing of already existing drugs that are used in other indications. The treatment consists on the combination of two drugs, simvastatin and rifaximin. In order to test it, there will be two clinical trials. The project is financially supported by the H2020 program with 6M euros and will be carried out between 2017 and 2021.
