Project from Catalan INNOBRAIN consortium to optimize cognitive rehabilitation for neurological and psychiatric patients

A new technology platform will facilitate the cognitive stimulation and rehabilitation of patients with cognitive impairment or decline as a result of a neurological disease, psychiatric condition, dementia or developmental disorder. The “Guttmann, NeuroPersonalTrainer®” platform, led by Institut Guttmann and the INNOBRAIN consortium, is part of NEXTHEALTH, the RIS3CAT community led by Biocat and funded by ACCIÓ and the European Union, through the European Regional Development Fund.

The INNOBRAIN consortium is working to integrate new technology into cognitive stimulation and rehabilitation for neurological and psychiatric patients, including computer/person interaction, emotional expression monitoring strategies using artificial vision, and artificial intelligence algorithms to predict the final result of interventions and improve the personalization of treatment, among other innovative elements.

“The consortium aims to boost strategic industrial research activities to improve usability, effectivity, efficiency, the generation of knowledge and personalization of treatments, as elements that add value to cognitive stimulation and rehabilitation services,” explains Guttmann Research Director Dr. Josep M. Tormos.

The INNOBRAIN consortium comprises Institut Guttmann, the EURECAT technology center, Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, Computer Vision Center (CVC), Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí de Sabadell, Girona Biomedical Research Institute, Institut d’Assistència Sanitària (IAS), Health and Ageing Foundation of the UAB, August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute and companies Starlab, which specializes in neurostimulation; SKY&EARTH, specializing in interactive digital videos; and ICA, an information and communication technology service provider.

Biocat and the RIS3CAT communities

The RIS3CAT communities are a pioneering strategy in Europe aimed at transforming the business fabric in Catalonia through 2020. The initiative is the practical application of the RIS3CAT Strategy for the Smart Specialization of Catalonia, approved by the Government of Catalonia in 2014 in response to the European Union directives associated with the Europe 2020 strategy. In this regard, Biocat coordinates the NEXTHEALTH community: Multidisciplinary solutions for the coming challenges in health in order to address the main challenges in health today. NEXTHEALTH has 5 projects, including INNOBRAIN.
