La Mutua Madrileña Foundation has awarded its 2,3nd Medical Research Grants, worth 23 million euros, to XNUMX studies and clinical trials aimed at improving medical treatments that will be developed in different research centers throughout Spain. Among them is an innovative project on tissue engineering for the repair of severe nerve injuries, which will be carried out at the Granada Biosanitary Research Institute (ibs.GRANADA) and will receive funding of almost 140.000 euros..

Dr. Victor Sebastian Carriel Araya, researcher at the Tissue Engineering group from the ibs.GRANADA and professor of the Department of Histology at the University of Granada, will lead the research team, which aims to develop and validate new peripheral nerve substitutes (PNS) created using advanced biofabrication techniques, such as 3D printing and the use of biological matrices. These PNS are designed to repair critical nerve injuries, which can currently only be treated with autografts, a technique with significant clinical limitations.

Peripheral nerve injuries affect approximately 300.000 people in Europe each year and can cause loss of mobility, sensation, or even affect internal functions, with a significant impact on patients' quality of life. Given this, the project's objective is to: offer an effective and safe therapeutic alternative that overcomes the limitations of nerve autograft, such as the scarcity of donor tissue or side effects in the extraction area.

At this point, tissue engineering comes into play, which allows the generation of tissues for clinical use through the combination of cells, biomaterials, and stimulation factors. "We want to develop a new generation of nerve substitutes that not only imitate the structure of the nerve, but also promote its development." regeneration and functional recovery", explains Dr. Carriel.

The project also contemplates the improvement of these substitutes through the incorporation of stem cells, as well as the optimization of manufacturing processes for future clinical application.

More than 20 years of support for medical research

Through these grants, the Mutua Madrileña Foundation has already allocated more than 72,5 million euros to high-quality medical research conducted in our country.

This year's 23 new projects will be developed in the areas of transplants, rare childhood diseases, severe traumatic injuries, oncology, and child and adolescent mental healthIn this edition, the foundation will support the work of research teams from 18 centers from 9 different autonomous communities.

The research projects have been selected by the foundation's scientific committee, chaired by Dr. Rafael Matesanz and including Dr. Ana Lluch, Dr. Enriqueta Ochoa, Dr. Miguel Caínzos, Dr. Antonio Torres, and Dr. Fernando Marco.

The award ceremony took place in Madrid and was attended by the president of the Mutua Group and the Mutua Madrileña Foundation, Ignacio Garralda; the president of the Scientific Committee of the Mutua Madrileña Foundation, doctor rafael matesanz; and the teacher José Manuel Ribera Casado, full academic of Geriatrics and Gerontology of the Royal National Academy of Medicine (RANME) and emeritus professor of Geriatrics at the Complutense University of Madrid.
