After 4 years of successful collaboration, the World Health Organization (WHO) has renewed ISGlobal’s designation as Collaborating Centre for Malaria Control, Elimination and Eradication.

Although ISGlobal’s support to WHO goes back much further, ISGlobal was designated WHO Collaborating Centre in 2013. This accord has now been renewed for an additional four year period, in which ISGlobal staff will collaborate in activities including scientific research, drafting of guidelines and technical manuals, and training in the malaria field.

Most of the planned activities foreseen in the work program will be carried out within the framework of two key projects of ISGlobal’s Malaria Elimination Initiative: the Malaria Elimination Scientific Alliance (MESA) and the Mozambican Alliance for the Elimination of Malaria (Maltem), supported by the “la Caixa” Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Among other things, the MESA database on research projects relevant to malaria elimination will be updated and research projects aimed to evaluate new tools and strategies for malaria elimination in Sub-Saharan Africa will be developed.

In addition, the agreement involves a research line on malaria in pregnant women, and support to the WHO Strategic Advisory Group on malaria eradication, in which ISGlobal is represented by the director of the Malaria Elimination Initiative, Regina Rabinovich. Finally, the agreement will reinforce training activities carried out in collaboration with Harvard University and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, including the annual course on the Science of Eradication: Malaria.

La renovación del acuerdo ha sido posible después de que ambas instituciones diseñaran un plan de trabajo para los próximos cuatro años, y tras una rigurosa evaluación del cumplimiento de los compromisos anteriores por parte de ISGlobal.
