The design of advanced high-energy-density supercapacitors requires the design of unique materials that combine hierarchical nanoporous structures with high surface area to facilitate ion transport and excellent electrolyte permeability. A work published in Advanced Materials describes a new material which provides a double profits strategy such as battery‐level energy and capacitor‐level power density.

The ICN2 Novel Energy-Oriented Materials Group, led by Prof. Pedro Gomez-Romero, is one of an international team who has developed Ultrathin Carbon Nanosheets with hierarchical porosity as the basis for a high-performing supercapacitor electrode. The international team included researchers from the Technical University of Munich (Germany), the Palacky University Olomouc (Czech Republic) and the University of Adelaide (Australia). The combination of this new carbon nanomaterial with a redox electrolyte leads to ground-breaking enhancement of the energy density of the storage device.
