Alfa Laval, a global leader in heat transfer technology, and Build to Zero, a developer of Electrothermal Energy Storage (ETES) technology, have taken a significant step forward in their strategic cooperation. The partnership just kicked off the manufacturing of an innovative once-through heat exchanger designed to produce medium-pressure clean steam. This cutting-edge steam generator technology will be integrated into Build to Zero’s proprietary ThermalBox® solution, aimed at
decarbonizing industrial heat processes.

In 2022, heat accounted for 50% of global energy consumption and 38% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (source: IEA). Industrial processes alone contribute nearly 20% of global CO2 emissions, much of which results from the combustion of fossil fuels in boilers. Decarbonizing industrial heat is critical to achieving net-zero emissions and represents a significant technological challenge.

"In line with the COP28 commitment to triple renewable energy by 2030, long duration energy storage plays a pivotal role in accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources. The partnership with Build to Zero marks a good step on the path to decarbonization and a more sustainable future", says Thomas Møller, President Energy Division and Executive Vice President, Alfa Laval.

"Our partnership with Alfa Laval marks a major milestone in our mission to accelerate industrial decarbonization. By combining Build to Zero’s innovative ThermalBox® technology with Alfa Laval’s cutting-edge heat exchanger expertise, we are creating a powerful solution to one of the toughest challenges in the energy transition: decarbonizing industrial heat" , says Joaquín Coronado, Chairman of Build to Zero.

Build to Zero’s ThermalBox® is one of the leading ETES solutions designed to tackle this challenge. The company was recently awarded blended funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC) to scale up its ThermalBox® decarbonization technology.

Alfa Laval’s contribution to this partnership includes the production of a once-through steam generator, which represents a breakthrough in molten-salt and water heat exchanger technology. The first of its kind, this steam generator will be deployed at Dekitra, a chemical manufacturer specializing in the production and commercialization of chemical solutions for the integral water cycle, paper, detergents, and agrochemical industries.

Through this collaboration, Alfa Laval and Build to Zero aim to accelerate the transition to sustainable industrial processes, helping industries significantly reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency.
