Angewandte Chemie highlights a CiQUS work (link is external) on the cover of a special issue that will be released during the VI EuCheMS Chemistry Congress (link is external), which will take place in Sevilla between the 11th and the 15th of September.

This work, entirely developed at CiQUS by Moisés Gulías and José Luis Mascareñas, represents an approach to one of the major goals in modern synthetic chemistry like the development of methods that allow readily available precursors to be transformed into desired products in an atom- and step-economical manner, and in an environmental compatible way. Especially challenging is the construction of biologically active products which feature relatively complex cyclic scaffolds, as there are many drugs and relevant molecular materials with this type of structures.

One of the best way to make cyclic products consist of the use of cycloaddition approaches, chemical transformations that convert relatively simple acyclic compounds into cyclic products. While classic cycloaddition approaches are based on thermal or photochemical methods, in recent years there has been a boost on the development of novel strategies based on the use of metal atalysis. Particularly relevant are those methods that promote the activation and cleavage of otherwise considered inert C-H bonds.

In this article the authors, in addition to review recent advances in this type of cycloaddition methods, propose a novel type of organization of these transformations. This new classification can have an important impact in the field, and foster new methodological advances that will further facilitate the synthetic construction of relevant cyclic drugs.

Euchems: an international approach to Chemistry

EuCheMS Chemistry Congress is the most relevant event in the European Chemistry framework, and represents a valuable and unique opportunity for world-leading chemistry professionals to meet, exchange ideas, and explore significant contributions to research at the forefront of chemical sciences in all areas related to chemistry.
