Palobiofarma is pleased to announce the successful completion of the industrial research project titled “Investigation of Dual Antagonist Compounds Targeting A2A and H3 Receptors for the Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease” (Project Code: 0011-1365-2023-000003), co-funded by the Government of Navarra.
The primary objective of this project was to discover and initiate the development of a novel therapeutic agent acting as a dual antagonist of the adenosine A2A receptor and the histamine H3 receptor. This innovative pharmacological strategy aims to offer a new therapeutic alternative for Parkinson’s Disease (PD), a chronic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability.
Parkinson’s Disease is caused by a deficit in dopamine secretion from nerve endings in the substantia nigra. It is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease worldwide, following Alzheimer’s Disease, affecting approximately 1–2% of individuals over the age of 60. While current treatments temporarily replenish dopamine or mimic its effects, none have demonstrated efficacy in slowing or halting disease progression. This highlights a significant unmet medical need for disease-modifying therapies.
The successful completion of this project has led to the discovery of a promising “First-in-Class” drug candidate, representing a major advancement in the search for novel treatments for Parkinson’s Disease. The social impact of this achievement is considerable, as it opens new avenues for therapeutic intervention in a condition that affects millions globally.
Palobiofarma remains committed to advancing innovative solutions in neuroscience and continues to collaborate with public and private stakeholders to bring transformative treatments to patients.
